I
have yet to meet a serious science fiction reader who missed
a Monty Python reference.
Monty
Python is as much a part of science fiction culture as Heinlein,
Asimov, or LeGuin. The Monty Python crew disbanded years
ago, but if you're looking for a new fix, or for a way to
corrupt an innocent representative of the younger generation,
may I suggest "The Story of the Quite Remarkable Adventures
of the Owl and the Pussycat"?
The
Story of the Quite Remarkable Adventures of the Owl
and the Pussycat
Written and performed by Eric Idle
Music by Eric Idle and John Duprez
New Millennium Audio / 2001
Abridged
2 tapes / 2 hours |
You're
probably all familiar with Edward Lear's "The Owl and
The Pussycat" -- and if you're not, you should be!
Why weren't you out misspending your youth?
In
any case, Eric Idle adapts Lear's poems and adds songs,
producing a delightful retelling of the story. The jokes
are gentler than a lot of those in the original Python days,
but just as silly, and the puns fly at a furious pace. Idle
performs a dozen different voices with zest.
Everything in this tape is integrated into the act of entertaining
the reader, even the chapter titles and instructions about
when to turn the tape over. Get this, listen to this, and
watch out for Pie Rats!
